What year did Mercedes update this model to address some of the issues it had when it launched?

I had a 2007 E350 sedan. It was super reliable. It had the updated brakes. The original brakes were brake by wire and they were problematic.

"I AM MOTIVATED SELLER.NO LOWBALL " ... really?

And this person spells 'brakes' - 'breaks'.

Something fishy here. And I've often wondered - what does that big engine do to the 4Matic system long term? AND THE AD IS IN ALL CAPS! WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME!!??

Not stupid at all. That engine and trans combo will last forever if serviced when it should be. Will probably have valve cover gasket leaks at some point, but those are super easy. Might need a $1k air strut in the 75k miles. The brake issues the early ones had were with the hydraulic unit (SBC, or Sensotronic Brake Control), and were mostly sorted by '05. They did extend the SBC warranty to ten years though so by now almost all of them have been fixed, it's been rare for them to make it out of that warranty range. Any dealer could look up the car's history for you.

Interesting. Gonna put this in to my possible pile of replacement vehicles.

If I lived in the Midwest I'd be all over it. A pre-purchase inspection will be your friend, just because they're reliable or pretty doesn't mean doesn't mean they were well cared for.

Avoid '06 unless the balance shaft has been replaced already, otherwise fantastic. Went away from SBC brakes in '06 if I remember right, so no problems there at all. They got better pretty much every year. Obviously there are still normal wear and maintenance items, but other than that they're really quite good. The only other thing with those is that they have the 722.9 7-speed transmission which occasionally has issues output turbine speed sensor necessitating replacement of either the valve body for early versions or just the "electric/conductor plate" on later versions. That usually costs between $1-2k at a dealer IIRC, depending on different variables. But it isn't so common that I would stress over it too much, just be able to handle that cost if it does come up. But if that had been done then you're pretty much golden as far as big repairs are concerned.
